Ending sexual assault in the service academies
With Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-New York) and other Members I have asked the U.S. service academies to begin programs to address the epidemic of sexual assaults at these elite institutions. Our letter to Superintendents Huntoon, Gould, Miller, and Stosz recommends the academies adopt new policies that will prevent sexual assaults, protect victims, and fully prosecute perpetrators. During the 2011-2012 academic year, the military colleges reported a 23 percent increase in these attacks. This is unacceptable, especially at institutions that are supposed to be grooming our country’s next generation of military leaders. I have the privilege of nominating students from the Northern Mariana Islands to four Service Academies; and I want to ensure that anyone I recommend will be safe while pursuing their education and serving our nation.
