Kilili wants stimulus money released

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan has written to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan asking for action on distribution of stimulus funds to the insular areas. Up to $267,000,000 of state fiscal stabilization funds were set aside for American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the NMI in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. States began receiving their fiscal stabilization money last month, but the insular areas have received nothing. The letter was co-signed Congresswoman Donna Christensen (D-VI).

“I am very concerned about this delay,” said Sablan. “Recovery Act money is supposed to protect the jobs of teachers and stimulate the local economy. Those goals won’t be met until Secretary Duncan releases the funds.

“I hope that Secretary Duncan makes these issues a priority so that we can start spending money in the Northern Marianas and get our economy back on track.”
