Three-month surface transportation extension approved

Jul 31, 2015

The House and Senate agreed on a three-month extension of the Highway Trust Fund this week – just as surface transportation programs were set to expire. H.R. 3236, the Surface Transportation and Veterans Health Care Choice Improvement Act of 2015 keeps federal-aid highway and other transit grants at the fiscal year 2014 spending level until October 29. Without this stopgap measure, the U.S. Department of Transportation would have been unable to reimburse the Commonwealth or any other state-level governments after July 31 and transportation projects across the country would start to shut down. This is the third short-term extension since October 2014, however; and we cannot continue to kick the can down the road. We need a long-term solution to fund transportation infrastructure and the jobs and economic activity that depend on it. A long-term, six-year bill, H.R. 22, did pass the Senate this week. Now, it is up to the House to put a proposal on the table before we hit the October deadline.
