Protecting Dreamers

Jul 30, 2017

Even in the Marianas, there are young people who are undocumented immigrants, but who are doing their best to contribute to our society and live the American Dream. Legislation introduced gives these Dreamers the ability to continue to live and work in America.During the Obama administration they received protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, but DACA now faces elimination by President Trump.

The American Hope Act of 2017, which I co-sponsored, grants conditional permanent resident status and, ultimately, citizenship to DACA recipients, as long as they remain law-abiding and are getting a college education, working, or serving in the U.S. military. That is a fair bargain for young people who never chose to break the law and have lots to give our nation.
