Nominations to the U.S. Service Academies
One of my duties as a Member of Congress is nominating the Northern Mariana Islands’ best and brightest young men and women to our nation's service academies. These academies offer students a first-rate – entirely free – college education, and the opportunity to receive an officer’s commission in the armed forces upon graduation.
Obtaining a congressional nomination is the usual first step for students who seek an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY.
Candidates interested in seeking a nomination from your office to one of these academies must request a copy of my nomination request form in addition to applying directly to the Academy's Admissions office. The complete nomination request form should be submitted by December 15 of the year prior to enrollment.
Once congressional nominations are made to the academies, the admissions boards at these academies make the final selection of students who will be offered appointments.
Appointments to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT, are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition.
Applicants for a congressional nomination should have a broad academic background, the ability to pass a physical aptitude test, and strong leadership potential. An applicant must also be a U.S. citizen, a high school graduate, ages 17 to 23, unmarried, have no dependents, and be of high moral character.
