2nd Vets Resource Fair next week
Your congressional office is once again hosting a series of Northern Marianas Veterans Resource Fairs. Veterans, service members, military families, and the public are invited to attend. Admission is free. The events are scheduled for:
· Rota: Wednesday, April 4, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Mayor’s Conference Hall
· Saipan: Thursday, April 5, 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Multipurpose Center
· Tinian: Friday, April 6, 2:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the Tinian Library
More than 30 federal, local government, nonprofit, and private institutions have confirmed their participation, and will be sharing information about their programs and services for veterans, service members, and military families. For more details, contact your congressional office at kilili@mail.house.gov or (670) 323-2647.
Lifeline essential to many families
A recent proposal by the Trump-appointed Federal Communications Commission Chairman could have consequences for 2,200 Lifeline participants in the Marianas. So last week I joined 67 of my House colleagues in sending a letter to FCC Chairman Pai urging withdrawal of this ill-advised proposal regarding the federal program that provides essential phone and Internet services to those who might not be able to pay. The FCC proposal threatens to arbitrarily cap the Lifeline fund and exclude certain carriers, although not IT&E or Docomo, from participating. This could force millions of qualified Lifeline participants to lose their telecommunications services. In the letter, we recommend other ways to combat fraud, waste and abuse other than cutting off millions of people from their “Lifeline”.
